Day 6: Monument Valley, UT

410 miles for Day 6 – I thought day 5’s drive was boring, but wooooieee. Don’t get me wrong the views are gorgeous, but there were only a few other cars sporadically and lots of desert.

We started our day off with an Orangetheory workout at Albuquerque Far Northeast Heights – this was an AWESOME studio we walked in and were greeted by Heather who was extremely nice and genuinely excited we were there. Jake was such a great coach, introduced himself to us and made sure we knew about the whole desert/elevation lack of oxygen ordeal. We definitely felt the elevation difference as our paces were different than usual – it was a power day (MY FAVORITE) so I loved the class.

We got a little bit of a later start, but we were both okay with it. It was nice to not hit the road first thing and I was so happy to get a workout in. We stopped off at Trader Joe’s to stock up on some fruits, veggies, and some protein bars for the road. Chris is getting a little sick so we picked up some goods for him too. Checking out, we were chatting with the cashier and wouldn’t you know it she is from Portsmouth, NH! What a small world.

Hitting the road we passed the sign for the Petroglyphs and decided to stop in really quick. There are tons of trails you can walk, but we didn’t partake.

Back on the road we went!

Gas Stop: Gallup, NM – $2.92/gal

After stopping to eat lunch and fueling up, the long trek through the desert began ..

Every 10 or so miles there would be a house or trailer or small community, but other than that there wasn’t much going on. A few cars here and there, but not a lot.

New Mexico has a bunch of “safety corridors” on their highways. These areas have a high death toll due to accidents and we could see why. People FLY on this road and will try to pass cars already speeding. That alone causes a ton of accidents, but there is also a HUGE driving under the influence issue.

About 90% of the litter we saw on the side of the road were broken beer bottles. We can’t imagine there is much for people to do.

We actually passed a wrecked car on the side of the road and the ambulance was just pulling away. We were behind it for a good 30mins before it reached a “health center” where a helicopter was waiting.

We eventually reached Four Corners where they charge you $5/person and your America the Beautiful Pass is invalid. Uhg.

From here to Monument Valley the drive was much better – more cars and more variety in the scenery.

Monument Valley and the area surrounding was gorgeous.

There was a restaurant overlooking these views in the welcome center so we grabbed dinner there before heading to our campsite.

Our campsite was only a couple miles away so it was perfect.

This was our campsite. How awesome!? You are right on top of other people, but what a location!

We opted for some car sleeping for the night.

Adios amigos,

JBJ
